PRODUCTION NOTES

Advanced students have the opportunity to perform in Academy DeTurk productions in the greater-Marin community and in other productions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

ACADEMY DETURK presented it's young performers'
version of QUILTERS in January of 2011.
It opened and closed twice to great audience response.
It also went on to Sebastopol where it
helped raise over $2000 for the Community Church
of Sebastopol and their youth programs.

"This production by Kristine Lowry and Scott DeTurk

is heartfelt and consistently entertaining.  The staging

is fluid and the stage pictures are inventive and

beautiful, as are the quilts.  The all-female cast sings

beautifully and the acting is wonderful.  More than all

of this, the piece is full of heart and these young

actors are being connected to the courageous and

pioneering women of our American past."

Jeffrey Bihr/AEA-Bay Area director, actor and educator.

"Kristine directs with an amazing eye for detail,

creating beautiful stage picture and lively, imaginative

blocking...bringing out the best of bright young talent."

Rodney Franz - Director of Theater Arts -

Marin School of the Arts.

" An impressive display of young talent, beautifully

directed...gives new meaning to the pioneer experience."

Charles Brousse - Former Critic Marin IJ

THE RIGHT STEP enjoyed a successful run at the beautiful 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley in 2006. About the production, Tom Segal, the show's Choreographer and Assistant Director said, “This is not one of those kids shows where you sit around saying ‘aren’t the kids cute’ and ‘aren’t they talented, for children’. This material is articulate, specific, deep and so are these kids. I highly recommend this show, because these kids are all exceptional performers, not because they are kids, but because they are wonderful performers that go for it with guts and gusto. They give you something to feel and to think about.”

I'M STRESSING OUT received critical acclaim and much media attention when it was produced in 2005. The entire cast was interviewed and performed a scene from I'm Stressing Out on the television show Rites of Passage. Click on the image to the right to view a clip from the show.

"...Scott DeTurk and his wife Kristine Lowry DeTurk have created a deeply moving, fast paced and delightful must-see musical "I'm Stressin' Out".  Working with students from their own musical academy they have fully incorporated not only the stress and angst of adolescence but have given those feelings an understandable dimension through...brilliant songs, direction and choreography."

"Thank you for touching on so many important subjects to teens in powerful ways that they can relate to.  "I'm Stressin' Out" is a "reality show" that makes a difference!"

Joan Deamer - Middle School Drama Teacher (Mill Valley Middle School)

""I'm Stressin' Out" is a new musical that dares to express the honest voices of teens in an entertaining and moving evening."

Jeffrey Bihr - Professional Director, Actor and Coach (ACT/Berkeley Rep)

"Not just for kids.  "I'm Stressin' Out" opens adult eyes to the teen world in terms painfully familiar to our ambitious acquisitive, relationship- damaged adult world. Teen problems are adult problems writ large.   Teens, live and act close to their feelings in this fast moving, poignant  and teen crafted but  adult guided musical tale about a real world of sadness, love, confusion, dreams  zits and raging hormones.  I rate this  wonderful play -TG- for Teen Guidance - a must see for parents with their kids about a bewildering teen culture we experience but do not always  understand. The post play dinner table  dialogue, should be illuminating."

Ira Okun-Former Director Family Service Agency S.F. - Retired

""I'm Stressin' Out" is an important must see new, original play.  It should be required viewing for anyone who has a teen or pre-teen in their lives.  It is also a must see for the kids themselves.  This creative, delightful, insightful, well-constructed original musical is enchanting, entertaining, fun and informative regarding the trials and tribulations of adolescence.  It will spark important conversations between kids and their parents, grandparents, teachers, pastors, therapists, and among the kids themselves.  This play is a rare find.  Scott and Kristine DeTurk work their magic using every means at their disposal: through music, lyrics, staging, casting and insightful, thoughtful dialogue.  DO NOT MISS the opportunity to see this play.  Not only will you come out singing, but thinking as well."

                                    Jeri Marlowe, M.A., MFT

"...Congratulations on your wonderful show, "I'm Stressin' Out" ... you deserve major credit for... creating ... a ...piece ... on one of the most important topics in our world today~the minds, morals, and emotions of our embattled youth.  ...the existence of such an ambitious theatrical project is rare.  ...you did it with ... insight, sensitivity, and skill.  It was obvious that your cast loved every minute of the hard work they put into the show, and that their participation will enrich their lives in just such a way their characters needed.  Nothing  upsets me more than the sarcasm, coolness, and jadedness of so many of today's teenagers.  It was refreshing to watch the kids in your show progress from that stage to greater compassion, understanding, and maturity. ...Thank you for taking on the challenge, and accomplishing it so adeptly.  I wish you every success with it."
